I just got back from a (much needed) vacation to the Florida Keys, celebrating our 7th wedding anniversary. First off, I can’t believe its been 7 years already. There’s no way I’m getting that old. But I digress….
After lots of research (because this is what I do!), I settled on a quaint patch of paradise in the Middle Keys and went to work finding the perfect flight, hotel, and rental car to complete our travel arrangements. It was then that I realized the inevitable when it comes to booking a beach vacation – it was EXPENSIVE. And then I got savvy:
1) Saved 53% on the flight. The price tag per person for a round trip flight was ridiculous. So, I set a price watcher on airfarewatchdog.com and waited – patiently. Finally, I got a notice that American was running a one-day sale and the price was right. Saved 53% just for being patient and watching the sales. That’s two flights for the price of one!
2) Sliced the hotel cost by 81%. Yep, you read that right. This is where points matter. I’m partial to the rewards program that hotels.com has in place – you earn points for every stay and redeem them for free nights. After redeeming points, I basically just paid for the tax. BAM!
3) Scored 50% off the car rental. This one’s simple – shop around. When my “regular” car rental agency had a high fee for the car rental, I perused my options…..and ended up finding something for half the price. I also searched for a coupon code (which I found of course) that scored me an additional upgrade.
Grand total: 61% off “regular” prices!
With all those savings, I was able to reward myself with some local key lime pie.
